Homosassa Fishing is a Mixed Bag of Fun!!
Homosassa Fishing is a Mixed Bag of Fun!!
Being on the water here in Citrus County in October and November is hard to beat! Most days the weather is absolutely beautiful and the water is usually flat calm! The pesky summertime afternoon showers are gone and the temperatures are comfortable. The fish are still migrating southward chasing baitfish concentrations and depending on the water’s temperature we are finding the hungry schools of predators either in deeper water or more near shore. The recent first cool front that moved through again dropped the Gulf’s water temperature down to a freezing 75 degrees and the fish moved in to shallower depths. This past Friday, while drifting in water 3 to 5 feet deep, south of Chassahowitzka Point, we caught a mixed bag of fish including Speckled Sea Trout, Spanish Mackerel, Sea Bass, Bluefish, Grunts and Jacks. These two Specs, 18 & 20 inches both inhaled a Berkley Gulp New Penny Jerk Shad as soon as it landed on the water.
Redfish are still in their summer pattern and will be as long as their food remains available and until the water temperature plummets. Try the outside edges of the islands at the mouth of Mason Creek, the bait of choice being cut bait either pinfish, ladyfish or mullet. This fat 29 inch Bronzed Redfish, ate a piece of cut pinfish on an outgoing tide and fought like a huge Stingray. Most days it’s hard to catch a Red inside the 18 to 27 inch slot limit as the big Bull Reds beat them to the bait. With lower water temperatures, Redfish will intensify their search for warmer water and food sources moving into deeper holes further inside the spring fed creeks.
