Homosassa Fishing – This is No Joke!
Homosassa Fishing – This is No Joke!
This is the time of the year that everyone around Florida’s Nature Coast gets excited about, the weather is Chamber of Commerce beautiful; the East winds should finally subside and we are returning to summer time tides. Plus the Gulf water temperature has reached the magical number of 70 degrees! The bite is on! The Speckled Trout are eating almost anything thrown in front of them, try west of the Bird Rack on an outgoing tide or Chassahowitzka Point to the south on the incoming tide.
Many “Gator” Trout over 20 inches have been coming back to the cleaning table! It’s very exciting to feel these big “Yellow Mouths” shaking their heads as you’re fighting them towards the boat. The Redfish bite continues to be best on the incoming tides around the outside edges of the mangrove islands or rocky shorelines. Try live Shrimp or Pinfish and hold on tight as these bronze bruisers hit like a freight train and fight like true champions. Remember effective February 1st, we are now allowed to keep two Redfish per day per person between the slot limit of 18 to 27 inches only in the Northwest Region of Florida. As far as I’m concerned nothing compares to catching big Redfish in shallow water for pure fun and excitement!
What also happens when the water temperature reaches 70 degrees is that you never know what going to hit your line next. We’ve had many days where we’ve caught anywhere between 7 to 12 different species, Spanish Mackerel, Sheepshead, Black Drum, Sharks, Sea Bass, Grunts are all still feeding aggressively. Keep a close eye on any Stingrays or Turtles you may spot as the Cobia should be arriving soon. “Let’s go CATCHING”!!!
