Homosassa Scallop Season Opens Early!!!
Homosassa Scallop Season Starts Early!!!
Don’t miss out on this year’s exceptional Scallop season!
Citrus County waters are pristine clear and filled with scallops, three times more than last year! The scalloping season opened a full two weeks early, after a research study by the State of Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute found very healthy scallop populations. Scientists found over three times more scallops than in 2009, and reports from the opening weekend confirm that this will be an especially successful season. Scallopers from all over are reaching their limits and having lots of fun along the way. Visit our website, www.HomosassaRedfish.com, today for more information on this family-friendly activity, as dates are filling up fast!
The inshore rock piles are still producing a great variety of fish such as Speckled Sea Trout, Spanish Mackerel, Snapper, Bluefish, Flounder, Black Sea Bass, and Gag Grouper. Good catches of Speckled Sea Trout can be found out by the Bird Rack and the Bombing Range, North of the Homosassa River. The water depth is around five to seven feet and the best baits have been Berkeley Gulp on jig heads either behind a Cajun Thunder or bounced off the bottom. The Redfish bite continues to be as hot as the weather. Try fishing the outside edges of the mangrove islands on an incoming tide with either live or cut, Shrimp, Pinfish or Ladyfish. The Redfish are using the shade of the mangroves to escape the warm waters. The Gulf of Mexico water temperatures have reached 90 plus degrees.
Is BP ever going to stop the oil leak? Or maybe the better question is do they really want to stop the leak? All Citrus County aquatic activities are continuing and unaffected by the Gulf oil spill. Fishing is plentiful, boating is unabated and we are enjoying one of the best scalloping seasons in recent memory, and visitors from near and far continue to enjoy the beauty and adventure found here on Florida’s Nature Coast. Captain Joe Eckstein from the Citrus County Emergency Operations Center recently spoke at a local meeting and he believes our area will not be affected by the spill if current conditions remain the same.
